Tutorial 18 – Coloring Tutorial

»
I’m using Photoshop CS2. This tutorial involves selective colouring, but it’s not mandatory that you use it. Although it also contains curves, it’s possible to achieve the same outcome by screening your base multiple times. So, this tutorial is translatable.

 1. Start with you base. This is mine. 😀
This tutorial works on darker images, I’ve found out. I chose a cap from Queer as Folk (US Version).

 2. I duplicated my base once, setting it to “Screen” and keeping it at 100%. This step varies with the base that you’re using. If 100% is too bright, feel free to lower the opacity. It’s your icon! 😀

 3. I added a Curves layer, settings below:
 RGB: Input – (168); Output – (214)
 Red: Input – (197); Output – (197)
 Green: Input – (191); Output – (199)
 Blue: Input (188); Output – (202)
For PSP users, you can keep duplicating your base until you think it’s bright enough.

 4. I added a new layer and filled it with #DFDFDF, a semi-dark grey colour. Depending on how much of a contrast you want for your image, you can make it darker. I then set this layer to “Colour Burn.”

 5. Here comes the selective colouring. These were my settings:
 Red: Cyan – (-40); Yellow – (+15)
 Yellow: Yellow – (+10)
 White: Yellow – (-100)
Again, PSP users, it’s not mandatory to do this step. It just gives it a little more colour.

 6. I then took my base and duplicated it, dragging it up to the top and setting it to “Screen” on 25%. Depending on your image, you might skip this step. I just did it to brighten the base a little bit more.

 7. Last but not least, I created a new layer and filled it with #2A1301, setting it to “Exclusion” and changing the opacity to 75%.

 My final result!

I’d love to see what you come up with!
Again, this is just a tutorial on how to achieve a certain effect.
Play around with it and see what you can come up with!

Comments are lovely, and so are questions. If you do end up using this I would love to see what you make out of it!
