Tutorial 11 – Brian and Justin Icon

August 31

we’re going to go from to

start out with your base. in this case, i’m using a cap from queer as folk, episode 1×01 because i love brian’s ‘oh fuck, i have a baby’ face [hee!] and let’s face it, brian and justin rule:

take your base and crop it to 100×100. do whatever you have to do to clean it up, you know, screen layers or whatever. if your image is darker, you’ll probably need a couple of screen layers and whatnot. luckily, this cap isn’t that bad, so it just needed sharpened.
go to filter – sharpen, sharpen again. then go to edit – fade sharpen – 41%

duplicate your base and set it to soft light – opacity 100%

new adjustment layer – solid color – fill it with black (#000000), set to to coloropacity 46%

new adjustment layer – selective color. input the following settings:
 reds: -100, 0, +100, +100
 yellows: -23, 0, -20, 0
 magentas: -100, -100, -100, 0
neutrals: +27, 0, -18, -17 and you end up with:

new adjustment layer – selective color. input the following settings:
 reds: -42, 0, +23, +31
 yellows: -57, -100, -100, 0
neutrals: +10, 0, +6, +13 and you end up with:

duplicate your base, drag it to the top and set it to soft lightopacity 33%

new adjustment layer – hue/saturationsaturation: +11

duplicate your base, drag it to the top and set it to screenopacity 15%

and you’re done! you can add brushes, text, textures, whatever you want. i didn’t because i’m lazy.
please remember that the settings and everything depend on your image, so just mess around and go with what looks best to you. just for reference, this is what my layer palette looks like:

 – comments and credit rock my face off
 – no hotlinking
 – cap from [info]rock_art

Comments are lovely, and so are questions. If you do end up using this I would love to see what you make out of it!
